Babbu Maan (Punjabi: ਬੱਬੂ ਮਾਨ), also spelled as Babbu Mann, is a Punjabi singer, songwriter, composer, actor and producer belongs to the Fatehgarh Sahib district (Malwa region) of East Punjab (India).



Early life

Maan was born as Tejinder Singh (Maan), on 18 or 29 March 1975, as the only son of Babu Singh Maan and mother Kulbir Kaur, in the village of Khant Maanpur of Fatehgarh Sahib district in Indian Punjab. He has two elder sisters.Babbu Maan has been very fond of playing music since his childhood, singing on stage for the first time during a school function in his village school at the age of seven. He would see everything through the eyes of a musician, even turning cooking pans into musical instruments as he created rhythmic sounds. He learned how to write lyrics, while at school (Panjab University, Chandigarh) when he was about 16. 

 Babbu Maan was born on 29th March, 1975 to Tajindar Singh Maan in the village Khant Maanpur in the Fatehgarh Sahib District of Punjab, India. He was always fascinated by music and it was his passion for it since his childhood days that made him a professional singer. He sang for the first time in his life at the age of 7 in a school function.

Music ran in his blood as he always used to look for a musical rhythm in everything he came across even the cooking pans. Later, he learned to write music while he was a student at the Punjab University, Chandigarh. Once he passed out from college, he started writing songs and composing music. He is the few singers who use his own lyrics for all songs he sings.

He is the only Punjabi singer who writes lyrics, composes music for all the songs he sings. Babbu Maan is very famous in Punjab for his unique style of singing and the usage of powerful yet soulful lyrics make him one of the greatest singers of Punjabi singing. He is among few singers who is said to have given a new identity to the Bhangra music. 

His songs are incredibly soul stirring and that's one of the reasons why he is such a rage amongst his fans in Punjab and India.


                                      Career

He started writing songs in his student life and released his first album, Sajjan Rumaal De Giya, in 1998, when he was 23. His second album, Tu Meri Miss India, was released in 1999 and was quite successful. The further albums like Saaun Di Jhadi , Ohi Chann Ohi Raatan and songs like Pind Pehra Lagda made him a star.

 Babbu Maan debuted in 1998 with his album Sajjan Rumal De Giya. Unhappy with the album he went back to the drawing board and re-wrote many of the songs, many of which were re-released in his following albums.

Tu Meri Miss India, his second album was released in 1999 was a smash hit.

His third album Saaun Di Jhadi released in 2001 was a highly successful album; It sold over ten million copies in India alone and many more overseas. In 2003 Maan was selected as actor and Music Director for the movie Hawayein in which he worked alongside his favourite singer, Sukhwinder Singh. The movie was highly successful. It was followed by his album, Ohi Chann Ohi Rataan. This album also fared well, in both critical acclaim and sales. Pyass was he's next album.

In 2006 Maan started on his first playback movie called Rabb Ne Banayien Jodeian, with its songs scoring another success for Maan. Mera Gham was a highly successful Hindi album. It focused more on slow romantic and sad songs with a few up-beat songs. The song "Ek Raat/One Night Stand" shocked many listeners, but nevertheless, the song has a very catchy beat.

Maan starred in a New Year's special called Aao Saare Nachiye which was also highly successful. Part 1 was released in 2008 and Part 2 in 2009. Maan's Film Hashar... A love Story, was the biggest film success yet in his career; the songs were also a hit. Recently Babbu released a religious album,Singh Better Than King. A song from this album "Ik Baba Nanak Si" was banned by the government. This was followed by a tv survey in which 80% of people supported Babbu Maan, 6% people supported the censorship of the song and 14% people did not participate. Nevertheless, it was successful album and it sold more than 25 million copies in (INDIA). On March 25 2010, Maan came out with his new Film Ekam - Son of Soil. The film faired well at the box office.

He has till now released around 14 albums and almost all of them barring a few have seen thumping success.

Even he worked in a film called Ekam- son of soil which worked reasonably well at the box-office.

Babbu Maan also released a religious album Singh better than king and had a controversial song called 'Ik Baba Nanak Si' and was banned by the government. However, though the album was banned but not before it had managed to sell more than 25 millions copies in India.
